This is a glimpse into my process: When I work from photo reference, I have a tendency to put in too much realistic detail (which is why I could never do caricatures in the park), so if I'm aiming for more stylization, I always start with the realistic drawing, to get it out of my system, then I refer to that sketch and play with the shapes until I'm happy with it.
